#AintNoCinderella: Indian Women Take On Politician For Blaming Stalking Victim
NEW DELHI: Indian women have taken to social media to slam a politician for victim shaming. Varnika Kundu was chased and almost kidnapped by two men whilst driving home in Chandigarh late at night; one of the men has been identified as the son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala.
Kundu shared her ordeal on Facebook. “They seemed to really be enjoying harassing a lone girl in the middle of the night, judging by how often their car swerved, just enough to scare me that it might hit me,” she wrote, adding that she felt lucky she was “not lying raped and murdered in a ditch somewhere.”
Ramveer Bhatti, the area vice-president of the BJP, attempted to lay the blame on Kundu, saying that the incident would not have occurred had Kundu not been out late at night. “The girl should not have gone out at 12 in the night,” Bhatti said. “Why was she driving so late in the night? The atmosphere is not right. We need to take care of ourselves.”
Bhatti’s comments sparked an outrage on Twitter, with Indian women taking to the micro-blogging site to post photos of themselves out and about with the hashtag #AintNoCinderella.
